Try making both of your computers on the same workgroup and give each Pc a name. Create a user account on each machine and log on with it. On each machine go to My Computer and right click on the drives you need to share and choose the share option. After both computers become visible in My Network Places, double click the computer name to access it,or map a network drive if you have large data that needs to be transfered.

You need a null serial cable, such as the FTS-6 listed here. Details on the wiring of a null cable can be found here.

Right, I assumed he was connecting through Cat 5 cabling to each machine and was gonna use TCP/IP or Netbeui Protocol, if not, This would be a option.
