What would be the details on this if you would please. I'm a little intimidated opening up my new PC and ripping her guts out. So you're saying that it wouldn't make a good back-up harddrive/

You can connect the drive in place of the DVD temporarily. The Bigfoots usually tend to not like being paired with another make of drive, and are large and often noisy - so don't plan on keeping it in the system for the long term.

Not internally, no - and given its age and the reputation of the bigfoots for unreliability, I wouldn't chance it.

Jumper it as cable select, disconnect the power and data cable from the DVD, and connect to the bigfoot drive. Boot, copy your data, and reverse.

"jumper it as cable select", could you explain? would the connections be the same or are adapters needed? Software install /reinstall needed before or after with either the old hard drive or the Phillips
DVD + - RW (IDE)?

There will be a set of jumpers on the drive for master-slave-cable select. The label on the drive should tell you which is which - the drive needs to be jumpered for cable select. No other modifications or drivers are necessary.

Thanks for all the info! Just out of curiosity, what kind of difference in transfer rate are we talking about betwween the hard drive transfer and using a usb/lan cable and software. Getting a lot of static from friends & family about ripping my new pc's guts out!

USB 2.0 will provide far more bandwidth than a Quantum Bigfoot will ever need - these are slow drives to begin with.
