"Unknown Device" Always

I know that I have loaded all device drivers for all my existing hardwares. But the Device Manager keeps showing "unknown device?". If I removed it, the computer looks for the "unknown device" upon boot up again. It doesn't show unfortunately, what hardware device it is detecting so I don't have any clue which driver it is looking for. My Dimension 8100 is working fine and I don't observe any problem at all. But what is it detecting? Please help. Thanks.

It is the ebutton (Metolious Vendor-Defined Sensor). If you are using XP there is little that you can do about it; Dell has indicated that there is a work-around in the offing; but who knows when.

If you are using any other version of Windows, then on your Applications CD, you will find the driver in \Apps\DSC\support\metdrvr; or you can install the Dell Support Center and the driver will be installed.

The unknown device is most likely the E-support button on the front of your computer. If you are running Windows ME you can get rid of the unknown device message by installing the Dell Solution Center which will load the drivers for the button. If you have just upgraded to Windows XP, then I believe you will have to live with it until a new BIOS upgrade is available.

Your suggestion to install the driver from \Apps\DSC\support\metdrvr also works in XP. At least it does on an 8100 with BIOS A09.
