Unknown PCI device

When I scan Device Manager in Windows 2000, I see a heading for "other devices" and when I click on it, I see a PCI device described as "Unknown". I'm told that the drivers for that device are not installed and I can't install them. The device is described as "PCI bus 0 device 31 function 3" and I have no idea what it is as all the PCI devices used by my PC are properly installed. Any clues?

Did you try to "Remove" the device and re-boot to see if it goes away? I am not familiar with Win2000 but with Win98 there is a Remove button in Device Manager.

steven_a_horn,

This Microsoft KB article may help;

PS I strongly suspect Volcano11 is right however.

Good Luck,

steven_a_horn,

It would be quite helpful if you told us what model computer you have. If you have an 8100, I suspect that the unknown device is the useless E-support button.

Steve, I have a Dimension 4100 which does not have an E-button. It does have an AGP video card and five PCI devices in Slots 1 to 5 which all work.

This Microsoft knowledge base article does help but only up to a point. I have more checking to do and will report back.

Windows 2000 has an Uninstall button but if I do that, the phantom driver simply re-installs itself when the system next boots up. It does no harm as I can disable it but it is frustrating.

Oddly, it may be related to my Intel 82801 BA Ultra ATA Controller as this has the address of PCI bus 0, device 31, function 1. The miscreant device has the same bus and device address but its function is 3.

The unklnown device is your chipset drivers. Here are instructions:

Thank you. I suspect this will make me much happier. :-)

Again, many thanks. I now have my SMBus driver back and no yellow question marks in my device listings. All in all, a great improvement.
