Updating USB Host Controllers

Dell dimension 5000 - 3242006  win XP SP2 DDR Ram 1024,

As a a frequent user of skype I upgraded my web cam hardware from Logitech Messenger to Logitech Communicate STX, after 5 mins or so video confrencing with others, the picture freezes and there is a loud buzzing noise which the other person can hear then there is communication breakdown. I have been on to Logitech support and they told me  me upgrade my Webcam drivers which is on their site, I did this and it is much the same, after contacting them again, I was told to upgrade the drivers on my motherboard by going to the website of the manufacturer.  On asking  Logitech support to clarify that bit of help, it appears that I should update all my USB Host controller drivers. I did this via device manager  going to properties of all 4 host controllers and the enhanced controller. but the webcam is still freezing and noisy interference takes place. I am thinking of reverting to my old Logitech Messenger webcam as the support team has told me the problem is with the USB host controllers which need updating.  I have tried updating them when online by the normal method in device manager but I get a message  that the best driver is what I am using. Help anyone who knows how to update USB Host controller drivers. I have been to the Dell download site but cannot find USB drivers for dimension  5000, maybe they are hidden somewhere, . I went to the intel site which was difficult and  virtually directed to driver detective which can do every thing they say at the click of a mouse but I have to pay for that service. However a nerd told me don't bother, as he has used them before. he is also baffled.

For starters, make sure you have the latest version of BIOS (v.A07, 12-7-05) on your system. Then make sure you have the latest version of Dell's Desktop System Software (v.1.9.0, A05, 11-21-05) for your system too. They're available on Drivers&Download page for your model. Either of those may have fixes or updates for USB issues.

Thank you RoHe for your useful Info which has resulted in me downloading and installing the Bios Update, and the Dell desktop system gave me 2 updates one for the soundmax integrated digital Audio which is the only driver file on my device manager Dated 2005. Al the rest  are dated 2001 and 2004 except the Logitech quickcam communicate driver dated 2005. One of the drivers downloaded did not have a digital signed certificate, and I was reluctant to install it but welcome any advice.

I intend to get on skype to carry out  tests with video chat to see if the problem has gone. I would like to add that any successful help I have had in the past in solving technical problems on My Dell PC came from the open forum helpline where the help and aviice is rock solid and clear. Say no more.

I have now tested the Webcam and the problem still exists,  However when I use a seperate microphone and reconfigure the sound system to isolate the  microphone built ionto the Logitech communicate STX webcam  there is no problem, I can talk with video till the cows come home. It looks as if the problem exists with the  microphone built into the webcam, or software linked to it.

Logitech support in UK  have virtually told me it is my USB hub or hostcontroller drivers which cause the problem.  If I cannot resolve the problem I will just have to use the camera with a seperate microphone.  Any comments or remedies welcome.

27th March 2006 ! After all the problems I have been having with this Logitech Communicate STX Web cam, today after calling Logitech support a different person who was on the helpline told me that Logitech does not support skype. It supports  Only Yahoo messenger windows mesenger, and a few of the big names. The mind boggles with these support teams, hence the reason I do not like using them, different operators dealing with you give inconsistent advice.

Thanks for the latest advice from Ron, I have now reinstalled software and drivers 3 times plus all my drivers on the PC are now Updated. In order to get some clarification on the issue of  logitech  does not support Skype Video,  I wrote to skype who sent me a tutorial on installing webcams and certain checks to ensure that the webcam is installed correctly. I carried out all these checks and decided to look at the accessories advertised on skype web page  maybe I would find a quality webcam which they advertise, then buy it to ensure that I had full support. To my amazement :smileysurprised: I saw the Logitech communicate STX webcam was among the few webcams Skype advertise on their accessories page and at a good price to.

Any comments on this subject welcome .

Back to my previous comment, defective webcam? Ask logitech to replace it, if under warranty.
