You can find a list of compatible processors for the XPS 410 in a post by Chris M HERE

Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version, 2.5.3, because with version 2.5.1, new CPU Support was added.

Note: The Core 2 Quad Q6700, is not listed, but is compatible.

The procedure for replacing the XPS 410 processor, is HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

As you intend to reuse the heat sink, plan on cleaning it's base and reapplying thermal compound to the processor.

Directions for cleaning and applying thermal compound, are HERE.

You only need a small tube of thermal compound, this can be purchased from any online, or local computer store.

Regards to upgrading the memory, the XPS 410 was only sold with a 32 bit operating system and the original Dell Bios only supported 4GB. The XPS 410 will support up to 8GB maximum with a 64bit operating system.

Best to go to www.crucial.com and use their Memory Advisor Tool, to find RAM that's certified to be compatible with your machine.

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is at your discretion in case you really wish to go ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty, however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

Maximum memory supported by system is 4GB (4x 1GB in each slot). The memory types supported are Dual-channel 533, 667, and 800 MHz DDR2. For Owner’s Manual, you may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/142P4UC.

*Note: Please follow the safety guidelines given in the manual while reseating any parts.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further questions.

Thanks and can is there any motherboard which can take 6gb ram

steve786

As I have already posted, the XPS 410 motherboard supports up to 8gb of memory, therefore it will also support 6gb, but you need install the DDR2 memory modules in matching pairs, for maximum performance.

Either the Quad Core Q6600, or the Q6700.

Core 2 Duo Conroe E6700.

All the processors for the XPS410/Dimension9200 are way past their EOL, you may be able to locate used ones on eBay.

Bios should be updated BEFORE changing CPU or ram etc.

INTEL Q6700

  • Product Type - CPU
  • Processor Type - Intel Core 2 Quad
  • Clock Speed - 2.66GHz
  • L2 Cache - 8M

I think that a specific low density Ram can also be used.  Some claim 16 gigs but I've never tried this. Also Note that any ram more than 3.5 Gigs REQUIRES 64 bit os.

Regards to the WG855 motherboard, yes it's the best MoBo available, because it's a Dell proprietary BTX motherboard and there are no retail units available.

While you can install 8gb of RAM to fully address this, you need a 64-bit operating system.

If you have a 32-bit OS, then only 3.5±gb is all a 32-bit system can address, what this means is, unless you are using, or upgrading to a 64-bit operating system, the cost of buying 8gb of RAM is wasted and is better to install the 4gb.

Another good vendor for RAM, is here,

http://www.newegg.com/Memory/Category/ID-17

Use Newegg's Memory Finder Tool.

A hint, prior to buying any memory, read the vendor's return policies first.
