Upgrade setup error message.

I am trying to upgrade Windows 98 to XP. Everything starts fine then I get an error message that reads: Setup can not copy M\i386\mfrc42.dll to C\WINDOWS\setup\mfrc42.dll. I have upgraded 3 systems recently from Windows ME to XP. Is there something I am missing???  I used the upgrade advisor and found no abnormal conflicts to make me think I could not  upgrade. Thanks for any help.

It sounds like you are booting to Windows. You have to change the boot order in the bios to place the cd rom ahead of the hard drive and save the settings. Then boot to the Win XP cd. You'll see "Press any key to boot from cd." Then you can reformat and install XP. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

Here's another KB article that might help:

nah i was just wondering....

boot to cd not floppy...

yah know there could be something wrong with hardware...maybe you should boot to the resource cd debug and then run extended diagnostics.

I already changed that. It was set to boot from floppy. The link you sent is how I upgraded the last 3. I will look through it some more.

There is only one. I noticed that the cd drive is named M. Does that matter?

I went into the control panel and uninstalled McAfee. The XP cd booted the correct way. I am on my way to another XP upgrade for a friend. Thanks All

DrPepper1437,

If McAfee was interfering you must be upgrading on top of ME. In that case, I pity your friend because the majority of XP upgrades over ME rather than as clean installs end up being disastrous in at least some degree.

I did a clean install from 98. Everything looks great so far. Fixing to install AVG, Search & Destroy, Emp Temp Folders 2.1. After windows update of course. I have had ZERO problems with these free utilities and install them for anyone that has issues with thier computer......These usally do the trick for the ones that just don't do simple maint. after thier subscriptions have expired. Gosh, most don't even use what they have paid for.  Thanks for all the help. I'llbe on again later. I can't figure out my DVD RW. I can get it to shrink and its on my computer, but I can't figure out how to burn it on a DVD+R. Thanks
