If a machine like a dimension 8400 has 4 memory slots and there are 2 512 memory chips already installed is it OK to install 1 1gB memory chip in one of the other drives or do all memory chips in a computer need to be the same size (and brand) ?

Dell dimensions 8400, should memory installed in matching pairs, if not, the system can take up to a 15/25% performance hit.
