Upgrading Processor on Dimension 8100 Trouble
I recently got a 1.9ghz socket 423 processor for my 1.3ghz socket 423 Dimension 8100. However, when i put it in everything was fine, except processor speed. It was only running at 800mhz instead of 1.9ghz. I have xp-1 bios installed. Does it need another bios or can this be upgraded? Anyone have suggestions? Please let me know.
Thanks,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Try resetting your bios defaults.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
**Reset the bios defaults.**
Dimension 8100 Reset Configuration Data
Restart your computer.
At the first text on the screen, or the Dell logo, press the (F2) key every three seconds until the message Entering Setup appears.
The System Setup screen appears.
Press the (Caps Lock) key, the (Scroll Lock) key, and the (Num Lock) key to light up all three lights on the keyboard.
Press the (Alt)+(E) keys at the same time.
The system will emit a beep tone to indicate that NVRAM has been cleared.
Press the (Esc) key and then press the (Enter) key to save the changes and reboot the system.
Proceed with the installation or troubleshooting that you were attempting.
**If you are using a USB Keyboard, you need to peform the following steps,
before exiting the 8100 system setup program.
Use the (Down Arrow Key) to highlight (Integrated Devices).
Press the (Enter Key).

I am afraid resetting the bios defaults did not work, it still reads it as a 800mhz processor.

i have checked with your system model and the processor that yoou should install is either a 1.8GHz or a 2.0GHz. Try to reset the jumper inside your motherboard near the CMOS battery.
How?:
1. Turn the system off.
2. Install the jumper for 1-2 seconds, remove it, and reboot the system for normal operation.
If you have problems locating your System board jumpers, try the www.support.dell.com website or use this link for specifications of your dimension 8100:
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dsleest/
hope this will help. thanks.

the jumpers are for the password and then the real time clock reset. I'm not sure I understand how that would help the motherboard recognize the chip. Also why would a 1.9ghz not be ok but a 2.0ghz would? thanks for the reply

I agree with popymola, here is further info.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
**RTCRST jumper troubleshooting.
You can find diagrams on the RTCRST jumper here.
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dsleest/techovu.htm
How do I use the RTCRST Jumper for troubleshooting?
Answer:
Remove all external devices and cables from the back of the system.
Remove the system cover and locate the RTCRST jumper.
(Location differs by platform refer to the service label or user documentation or Dell technical specifications).
Remove the jumper shunt from the (PSWD) Password jumper block.
Place the jumper shunt from the (PSWD) jumpers, onto the RTCRST jumper.
Remove the coin cell battery.
(Location differs by platform refer to the service label or user documentation or Dell technical specifications).
Reinstall the coin cell battery up side down, and wait 15 seconds.
Again remove the coin cell battery.
Reinstall the coin battery back to the original orientation.
Remove the jumper shunt on RTCRST jumper block.
Replace the jumper shunt back onto the (PSWD) jumper block.
(You must place the jumper shunt back onto the correct pins on the PSWD block.)
Install the system power cord, video cord, mouse, keyboard.
Power up the system to see if the problem has changed.

I reset the board settings and went back through the bios setup utility. And also cleared the nvram. Unfortunately, the system bios is still reading 800mhz and not 1.9ghz.

Check the following:
Go into the bios.
Scroll down to CPU Information and press Enter.
Check to make sure the CPU SPEED is set to NORMAL.
If it is set to COMPATIBILITY change it go NORMAL.
Then exit the bios and save the changes.

I've tried it both ways. Both compatible and normal and still no luck

I used wcpu real clock checker and it showed about 797mhz, so aroudn the 800mhz range. And the old chip, the 1.3ghz would report correctly. So this new one was running slower at 800mhz instead of 1.9ghz.
