I need some advice on upgrading my processor on my dim 4400. I already know that i can't go any faster than 400mhz fsb. I was wondering what is the fastest running gigaherts the chip can be that this certain system will accept. Currently it has a pentium 4 1.60 gigahertz w/ 640mb (1 512, 1 128) of ram. If someone could help me out on this issue it would be greatly be appricated
Yes, it does matter. The Celeron has only 1/4 the L2 cache of the Northwood P4, and that hobbles it - figure on a 2.8 Celeron performing about on par with a 2.0-2.2 GHz P4.
There are 2.8 P4s and Celerons - the former is not as common. If you have to choose, take a 2.6 P4 over a 2.8 Celeron.
Earlier this week, Newegg.com had the 2.8 P4/400 in stock for a reasonably good price (about $170).
does it matter if its pentium 4 or celeron because i heard that there was. someone told me that 2.6 for the pentium and 2.8 for the celeron. Is that true?
There are several of us, including myself, that have recently taken the plunge and upgraded our CPUs. I would advise against going the Celeron route, too. The forum is 'littered' with recent CPU upgrade tips.
Good luck,

It won't take a P4, so you're limited to Celeron and P3 CPUs - if you are at or near 1 GHz, there's little room for upgrades - the max is a 1.4; it's not worth the cost of a new CPU for an increase you'll likely never notice.

Check out the Dimension - Upgrade Hardware forum for CPU upgrades.
