USB Controller Problem
My 8250 dimension is having a problem with USB ports. The system does not recognize them when I plug in a USB device. It appears that the controllers are not being recognized. When I try to do an install from the drivers CD that came with the system it fails. I try to execute the software however when it comes to the SW agreement license it tells me that I must accept to continue. However the only choices available to me are "Print", "Back" and "No". There is no box to accept which stops me from continuing on. When I accept "Print" it then brings me to two other choices - "Print to File" ans "Print to Printer". I take print to file and then it continues however when it says that it is finished I receive a message that says access denied.
It will not even let me update the drivers in the device manager. It fails and gives me the access denied message. The system is finding the USB controller because when I start the system up the "New Hardware Found" message comes up. It will not let me install because it can't find the software drivers.
Anybody have any suggestions?

First what version of windows do you have installed in this system and do you have the latest service pack installed for that operating system? Then in device manager do you have any conflicts listed or other problems noted here? Have you tried removing the USB from device manager then rebooting? Have you checked the BIOS to make sure that it has not been disabled in BIOS?

Am I to understand that the Dell Latitude C640 to which I am trying to add the driver for the HP psc All-n-one cannot support this device because the device is a USB 2.0 and all I have is a 1.1? I have been trying to add this for 2 days now and have done everything imaginable, twice. Will one of those USB laptop cards help me to load this printer?

I am running windows XP Home and have all service packs applied. There are no conflicts in the device manager. I've even tried to delete the USB controllers that are shown with an "!" in a yellow circle. I've checked the BIOS and there are 4 RQ settings listed (0,3,9,11) for the 6 ports.
I've tried different version of the VIA 2.0 drivers but they never install. I get a message that says "VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Companion Controller"
"An error occured during the installation of the device"
"The data is invalid"
I really running out of ideas here. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks for your response. This is driving me nuts. I am using Windows XP Home Edition. I have reapplied SP1a.
Deleted all of the controllers and tried to let Windows find them. Upon reboot is does in fact find them. When I try to load the drivers I get an error message that the load has failed and "access is denied".
I reloaded new versions of both the chipset software and the UBS V2.0 drivers.
I've run the Dell diagnostics on the pc and the UBS ports are there.
I don't see any conflicts in the device manager.
The bottom line is that something is not allowing me to load the UBS Controller drivers. I even tried to load these in "safe mode" to no avail.
I literally spent hours on this and seem to be spinning my wheels.
Any other suggestions? I am fairly technical and am willing to try anything at this point.

I bought a print server to attach my printer because the USB port did not work. The print server didn't work either, but the new USB cable that came with the print server awoke my USB port on the Dell latitude running win2000. After the print drivers loaded in about 2 seconds from the same CD that failed earlier, I reattached the USB cable that came with the printer to the latitude USB port and the printer still works. go figure. I don't know it for a fact, but I wonder if it wasn't the cable to start with. But, since I'm still using the same cable now, it's hard to say.
