USB Device not recognized!!!!!!
Hi all,
this is my first posting! I am a little techologically challenged when it comes to some of this stuff so be patient with me.
We just got an external hard drive at work to back up our files onto. Everytime I plug it back in, I get the message USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED
usually it takes about 50 times of unplugging and replugging or rebooting my computer to fix. But today, nothing is working.
I am quite frustrated by this ongoing problem. Is there anything else I can do to fix it (permanently?)?
Thank you so much. I feel much better writing about it . I was about to throw the thing out the window!!! =)

Hi,
Please advise your computer model and operating system.
Check that you have the chipset drivers installed in Device Manager.
Control Panel
System
Device Manager
Look at the bottom of the list for USB, post back with the information listed there.
Try the external drive on other USB ports front and rear .
If you are running Windows XP, then you need SP 1 if your computer & external HD are USB 2
If the hard drive is only USB powered then you may not have enough power on the USB bus, solved with a powered USB hub, that matches the power requirements of the external hard disk. Try unplugging all other USB devices except keyboard and mouse if these are USB.
