usb external floppy drive install problem

When the usb floppy drive is connected the operating system recognizes the device and installs the drivers but does not assign a drive letter. The following is stated when the device status is shown in device manager.  Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Hi,

Check using TWEAKUI in the MS add in for Windows that you have the drive letter enabled for the floppy disk drive.

I have an external USB connected floppy disk drive on my D4700.

XP Home Pro and now Vista Ultimate all recognised it as the A drive.

Check that you don't have a normal floppy disk drive enabled in BIOS

Check the drivers and download page for this model (which you never mentioned. :( ) Look for a utility called Dell Desktop System Software (I'm assuming this is a desktop). Dell made USB fixes on some models via Desktop System Software utility to allow proper handling of USB floppy drives etc. If you find it, download to desktop and install it in Safe Mode (F8 before XP starts to load). Then reboot normally and test the floppy.
