usb issues

hmm, have not considered doing a system restore, would have to go back several months, too many other things to consider first

i was at a computer store earlier today, took the mp3 player, it worked ok there, and the fellow thinks it might be usb issues with the pc's here.... i plan to go and buy a Real Win Xp CD and Format all the Dell Ware and see if that cures all the glitches and hiccups, it worked for a dell laptop i had before, and seemed to be the ticket

still, i wonder why this happens, like if the device works one day, and i do nothing, then why not work the very next day? no viruses, no adware, least according to recent scans, i would try calling dell, but have not had success on that route before....

will wait to get the Real Operating system cd and not the dell one as that works before....

First off, the Dell CD is a 'real' XP disk. It only installs XP, no drivers, no software, nothing except XP. It's keyed to Dell BIOS so only installs on a Dell PC and can't be used on a non-Dell system.

Are you connecting the device to the same USB port as previously used? Have you tried a different USB port? Do you have more USB devices connected today than yesterday, and overloading the USB ports?

You could try the generic fix for USB issues. Disconnect all USB devices except mouse and keyboard. Open Device Manager and expand list under USB. Right-click and uninstall all USB entries. Exit Device Manager and reboot. XP should reinstall the USB ports. See if the device works now.

It's always a good idea to include the model of your PC and version of Windows in your posts.

You could do a System Restore to a date earlier this week when the MP3 player worked. The only thing you'd lose would be any software or XP updates originally installed after the date used for the System Restore.

If you want to reset the system to exactly the way Dell shipped it (PC Restore; Ctrl-F11 before XP starts to load) you'd have to back up all your personal files, including email address book, browser Favorites list, etc. onto CD first. All personal files, any software you added and all XP updates are lost when you do a PC Restore. PC Restore is available on Dell systems shipped after 7-14-04.

But before you get too drastic, try uninstalling and reinstalling the USB ports. If that doesn't solve the problem, try running the windows system file checker to replace any missing/damaged XP system files:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

You could also do a Repair/Reinstall of XP. Personal files and software survive, but always a good idea to back up first. When that's done, you'd only have to reinstall all the XP updates and fixes.

So you have choices...
