USB "Keyboard Failure" on Precision 450 using A05 version BIOS
I have a Dell Precision 450 with the latest BIOS (A05) and have noticed that it throws frequent "Keyboard Failure" events after BIOS loading.
I'm using a USB keyboard and mouse on the Precision450. Actually this error appears to only happen when only a USB keyboard is attached.
The only way around this, that I've found, is to plug in a PS2 keyboard (I still have the original "shipped" keyboard).
It appears that the BIOS has some problem when it can't find a PS2 keyboard. Actually, what I've found is that the key sequences F2, F12, etc. only work when a PS2 keyboard is attached and only when the key sequences are entered on the PS2 attached keyboard.
When failure occurrs, the system sometimes has to go through the boot sequence several times before it succeeds. Once the OS comes up (XP, Win7), the USB keyboard works fine and has no problems.
I reported this to DELL a long time ago, but they said they didn't have any reports of the problem. I really wish that they would fix the BIOS, but I have a feeling that the Precision 450 line is dead and buried. So my only solution to those out there having this problem is to plug-in a PS2 keyboard and throw it behind the machine. You'll only have to dig it out if you want to use a BOOT key (F2, F12, etc.) to change to boot sequence as your USB keyboard will be useless until the OS boots.
