USB problem

Question

I don't know if anyone can help me or not but it won't hurt to ask. OK, I transfered my Dimension 4600 guts into a rackmount case.  Everything works fine except for the front panel USB.  When I plug in a memory stick it locks the mouse and keyboard and I have to power down and reboot.  It appears the motherboard FP USB header is 9 pin.   Of course Dell has it's own connector that doesn't follow standard USB conventions.   I don't know how to get exact pin assignments for the motherboard in Dell Dimension 4600. I put a multimeter on motherboard header and as far as I can tell the pin assignments are as follows.       Red     _     White     _     Green     _     Blk     _     Blk       (Header 1 Connector)   +5V     _      USB1-   _     USB1+   _    GND   _   S-GND   Red     _     White     _     Green     _     Blk     _     Blk       (Header 2 Connector)   +5V     _      USB2-   _     USB2+   _    GND     It seems it should be simple but it has been a big pain, I just don't understand why it won't work.   I did reverse the white and Green wires on the connector and plugged in a memory stick and it didn't lock the computer but I got a message that USB device is not recognized.   If anyone can help or offer some advice as to where to go to get the pin assignments for my motherboard.  I tried emailing Dell support and they didn't even understand what I was asking for let alone help me. Thanks, wally

Thanks, but those are the specs for the front panel controls and lights. I'm looking for the pin configuration for the front usb ports

My problem has long since been solved.  I got tired of trying to figure it out and just added a card w/3.5' Bay Front Panel USB & Firewire ports.  I just taped over the ones I couldn't get to work and went on.  Why something that should be so simple was so maddening I guess I'll never know.    Luckily I had an empty slot and bay.   wallymeister  :smileyhappy:

I just super glued the door to the fromt usb and audio ports and let it go. I spent 2 hours on the phone with dell tech and 2nd tier tech and they could not find an answer, and I think they REALLY tried to help, which was a surprise....
