Video Card, code 12

I got a Nvidia Geforce fx 5500 pci video card. When I install it , I get a code 12, not enough resources. I meet all the system requirements, and the card works because I have tried it in another computer with less ram than mine. I reinstalled xp and it worked fine, but once I installed vista I got the code 12 again. I disabled other devices, even took some out and it still says the same thing, is there any way to fix this. I would like to use the windows aero and dreamscene and all the goods and have better gaming graphics.
My specs.

First you got an old entry level system, but you installed Vista Ultimate in it that needs 2 Gb of memory to work well,  and you only have 1 Gb which is the max limit for your Dim 2400 system.  Unknown why you even put Vista on that system and the Ultimate is a head scratcher.  Big waste of money and too many issues including the proper Vista video card drivers.

Second, you have a nVidia 420 card in the system now.  Are you replacing that card with the FX 5500 or are you trying to put in two graphic cards in it  ?

Stick with Windows XP and you will be better off.  Next time ask someone here about Vista, an entry level system, ram limitations and what the experts say about trying to do what you have done with the Vista Ultimate

I checked the system requirements and it said recommended was

  • 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

  • 1 GB of system memory

  • 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

  • Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:

    • WDDM Driver

    • 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)

    • Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware

    • 32 bits per pixel

I have all that, and the card I am trying to replace the 420 with the 5500.
And with the vista video card drivers, I installed the card in another computer with vista ultimate and it worked just fine. No error code or anything. And that computer only had 504 mb of ram. So it was a bit slow. But they now have xp again because it was way to slow. but I haven't had any glitches or lag time or anything. Everything runs smoothly.

I even downloaded a wondows vista upgrade advisor from microsoft, and it my system could run ultimate no problem, would just need to upgrade the video card, which is what I am trying to do..

Never go by the system requirement from Microsoft.  Misleading at best, and discussed numerous time by many on the web.  Always have more, much more, to be on the safe side.  You still only have an entry, very old computer.  Why in the world would you want Vista on it and have problems that you are now noticing  ?  Not worth it at all.  XP is a better performer if you have not done the homework unknown_guy.

Some PCI slot cards to consider. None of which are great cards, but slightly better than the integrated video chip installed now.....

5500 PCI slot card. Only analog input
