virtual memory problem

I am running Windows XP on a Dimension 2350.  The first problem I have is when I boot up and try to go to my user file, the systems stalls for about 2-3 minutes before going to my desktop.  The next problem I have is that when I am on the internet and try to open more than one window at a time, I get an error message that says : " Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file."  My system will continue on for  short time and then the pages disappear and I have to reboot the system.  I have done a disk defragmenter and disk cleanup.  I also regularly clear out my cookies and temporary internet files as well as my history.  I have tried increasing my paging file myself to no avail.  The only other software I have is WordPerfect 10.  I also have a problem running my McAfee virus scan.  Please help me solve these problems.

How much ram is installed in this system? When you open task manager how many processes are running? Have you tried disabling processes that you do not need to have running all the time to free up ram?

I have 64Mb Ram on this system.  I also have about 50 processes running.  How do I know which processes I can disable?  Thanks for your help.

I think thats your problem..  Its really bad to run windows XP with less than at the bare minimum 128 MB of ram.  My system has 256 and I really need to upgrade to 512 so Win XP will work better.  Im surprised your system will even start up with XP.  You dont have to buy Memory at dell.com so dont worry about upgrading being really expensive.  All you really need is 256 MB Ram which is only gonna cost you about 90 dollars.  Surf for memory modules at www.pricegrabber.com. Dell is waay overpriced.  If your not sure about what type of memory to buy you can look up your system specs pretty easily with the reference tab.   Hope i helped.. ;)  Alan

Windows XP can run with 64 MB ram. Thats the minimum, and 128 MB is recommend (by microsoft).

http://www.pricewatch.com/ - click memory - system, yours probably uses PC2100, so get a 256 MB stick of that, you can get it for less than $40 easily without looking too much. It will work as long its compatible with your PC.
