virus removal
This is about my parents computer. They are almost 80 yrs old and live in another state. I received a call from them Tuesday that an error message came up when she clicked on an email. The error message said the attachment was infected with the W32.Bad.transB@mm virus. It suggested cleaning the attachment. I told her we needed to delete the virus. But she said there was no place to do that. I had her pull up her Norton scan and have it scan. It said no virus detected. I had her go to edit, select all and delete all the inbox and then do the same with the deleted items file. The error message still came up. So I had her shut it down completely and on later thought I had them unconnect the phone line. I am going to go up there early Saturday morning to try to fix this. I have printed every thing to do with the fix on the Norton site.Any suggestions on where to start first? And is there anything else I should copy? There isn't another computer around to use to find info.
Their computer is a Dimension L566cx an was bought a yr ago. I don't know any of the other info

Get it at their site. Easy deal.
It's called "FixBadtr."

If subsequent scans show no virus then I think all is OK.

Maybe I'm read your post incorrectly, but when I receive a virus, Norton says I have a virus and do I want to fix it (I forget the exact wording, 8 more years and I'll be your parent's age). I say yes, Norton tries, always unsuccessfully, and then says It cannot repair it and will put it in Quarantine. Since the affected file is in Quarantine, it isn't readily available except by bringing up the Norton window.
I suggest you tell your parents to go ahead and let Norton try to repair the virus. Scanning the computer for viruses will not find those in quarantine.
Be sure to have your parents run LiveUpdate frequently.

Viruses are just software and once you have deleted any necessary programs, sub-programs, registry entries, icons, etc. then it is gone for good.
Good Luck.
