Wake-On-LAN
I need to get "Wake-On-LAN" working on our network. We use Dell Optiplex PC's of models ranging from GX150 to GX720. I know very little on the subject and would appreciate some help to point me in the right direction.
Also, how is the wake up process initiated over the network?
Many thanks
Geof

Just by pure chance noticed you had updated original post – after my reply

If PC motherboards (mobo’s) support WOL through mobo power management then:
Specifics for setting up & initiating WOL depends on operating platform (OS) used
For Linux OS Wake On LAN client – FAQ click here
Also this from Ubuntu Form – 5 full pages of How To info here
General principal of how it works is the same, that is:
If a computer is:
WOL enabled & is shutdown through the OS & still has a mains power supply
The network adapter device uses a very small amount of power to remain active & listens for a specific IP transmitted packet, sometimes called the Magic Packet, sent from another computer
If the Magic Packet script is valid (contains the correct secure data) the computer will boot/start up
Sometimes referred to as computer remote start up
More in depth troubleshooting info from Intel, click here
Lots of web sites provide Magic Packet program scripts or codes & some are free
A few examples:
For Linux click here
For MS Windows click here
A tutorial script from (interestingly) Hacker not Cracker, click here
For a lot more just do a Google search
Note the obvious security issue is the need to include (thereby disclose) computer network adapter MAC address in the program/script used to create & transmit the Magic Packet
Hope this brief explanation helps point you in the right direction :smileywink:
