WARNING - McAfee Users

WARNING !!

The McAfee AV definitions released today for version 4x (dat-4102.zip) caused Windows 98 to crash at boot-up on both of my computers. I had to go to Safe Mode and re-install the previous week's AV definitions on both. I did a Logged Boot and it looks to me that this update causes all the Windows fonts to fail to load.

I upgraded my virus definitions yesterday when the 4.0.4102 version first came out. So far I haven't experienced any problems with them. By chance are you still using the 4.02 version of McAfee's? I found that version of the software to be a little buggy and my problems went away with the 4.03 upgrade.

HI,
From the McAfee Forum:
There is no problem with the sdat/dat 4102. The problem comes from the fact that some computers/users have not updated their scan engine in a while. If you update your scan engine to the latest version (in other words 4.0.70) using the superdat 4102, all of your problems will go away.
Thanks to Robin Kristy for locating this for us!

Majestic,

I have version 4.0.3 of the scan engine. I am well past the time limit to get a free upgrade of the scan engine. When I installed the 4100 update, McAfee gave me an alert that an Iomega file called Refresh.exe is a virus. It has a shortcut in the Startup folder and is part of the standard Iomega Software that has been on my computer for 2 years and creates the icons for Iomega's ZIP drive in Windows Explorer. McAfee also reported that a simple batch file I created myself to delete the contents of a folder was a virus also.

Rather than spend the money to upgrade McAfee, I just returned from CompUSA after buying Norton AntiVirus 2001. Now if I can get McAfee completly off my system, I will be happy. Thanks for the info though.

Don -

Although the time limit has expired for accessing McAfee's upgrade page, you can still FTP their site and download the latest definitions and superdat downloads which included the current scan engine. Only problem with this option is that it requires a little more of a manual installation.
