The first step in trying to resolve the problem is to replace the battery on the motherboard.  Given the age of the system, if the battery was never replaced, the battery may have failed.  A bad battery would cause the loss of the hardware configuration information at boot up like you are experiencing. 

 

A new 3-Volt, CR2032, coin cell battery can be purchased for around $3 (US) and is available at any Radio Shack, computer stores and most discount stores like Wal-Mart.
