Usually this occurs after something very serious has occured.
I don't know what happened, but evidently windows corrected it.
I'd have a little talk with your bro and tell him you're not gonna be mad (Even if you do). Find out what happened.
The most likely story will be...Some error or something came up and I had to do a Ctrl Alt Del and reboot, then it went into safe mode, and fixed some stuff...yadda yadda yadda.
Believe me! I've been through the same thing. LOL!

I am having the same problem and have done all the recommendations listed above butnone are working. Have had the computer for 3 days and have been getting this message since the second day. Thinking about packing it up and going back to my old system

Hi

If you intend to return your computer, please remember that you ONLY have 30 days from the date shown on the invoice, NOT the date you recieved it, or you could try posting details of your problems on the appropriate forum for help.

This worked for me!!!

I had error reporting off during this process so turn it off. I turn it back on at the end. It might not matter but it is the way It worked for me.

----- A STARTUP SERIOUS ERROR FIX
==========================
(1) SET VIRTUAL MEMORY TO NO PAGING
a) Right click My Computer --> properties
b) Advanced
c) Performance Settings
d) Advanced
e) Virtual Memory --> Change
f) WRITE DOWN INITIAL SIZE (~384) AND MAX SIZE (~768)
g) Select No Paging
h) Select SET
i) Ok

This might be important to log off instead of just restarting. The first time I tried this I just restarted and it didn't work

(2) LOG OFF/RESTART
a) Close everything
b) Start --> Log Off
c) Turn off...computer --> Restart
d) Login back in (Admin Level Account)

(4) RUN ERROR-CHECKING AND DEFRAG
a) Start --> My Computer
b) Right click C: drive
c) Select Properties, Tools
d) Select Check Now (Error-checking, ~15min., eat dinner/surf the web)
e) Then select Defragment Now (~15 min., surfed the web)

(5) LOG OFF/RESTART

This is when I turned error reporting back on

(6) SET VIRTUAL MEMORY BACK TO ORIGINAL SIZE
a) repeat 1a-e
b) Enter noted Initial Size (~384) and Max Size (~768)
c) Select SET
d) Ok

(7) LOG OFF/RESTART as above

(8) END OF PROCEDURE AND HOPEFULLY END OF SERIOUS ERROR MESSAGE!!!
This worked for me I have restarted 4 times now without the error!!
