what memory for 170

I would like to replace the memory in my Son's Dell Optiplex 170.

What spec of memory do I need? There is so many numbers listed on the various sticks for sale; DDR, DDR2, DDR3, PC2100, PC2700, buffered, unbuffered, etc, etc, etc.

Please help.........

Assuming that you reside in the UK, you can buy certified compatible Optiplex 170L DDR memory from HERE

Thanks for the response, but I'd rather not pay £35 for 1Gb memory.

The purpose of asking what specs are required is in order to purchase it a LOT cheaper from other sources.

You're not going to find DDR a "LOT cheaper..." I'm afraid :emotion-55:

You *may* find it slightly cheaper elsewhere - if you shop around enough, but the reason it's so expensive, is because it's older DDR RAM, rather than the newer - more readily available, and subsequently cheaper DDR 2 :emotion-55:

Not only does the Crucial RAM carry a lifetime warranty (which most does these days), but... more importantly... it's guaranteed to work in your system.

So you may well be able to buy PC2700 DDR slightly cheaper elsewhere... but it won't be guaranteed to work.

Many Dell systems are picky about the RAM they can use.  Is saving (i.e.) a fiver, worth that risk?

I've just priced up 1GB DDR 333MHz modules on a few of the more popular UK websites (Ebuyer, Scan, Aria, CCL, Micro Direct etc), and the prices are hardly any different to what Crucial are asking :emotion-55:

For instance... Ebuyer - 1GB Crucial PC2700 = £37.14! But that's not just because it's Crucial RAM.  Even the "Extra Value" stuff they're selling is £35.14.

1GB "Major" PC2700 DDR from Scan is at least £29.87... with 1GB Corsair Value Select costing £40.22!

Similarly... a 1GB module of Corsair PC2700 DDR is £40.xx from CCL!

So as you can see... Crucial's price is pretty darned competitive - especially considering it's guaranteed to work :emotion-55:
