The motherboard in Dell 2400's are a proprietary motherboard.  A standard ATX motherboard will not work (physically in the case) and Dell's have a proprietary front panel power switch connector.

with it being a P4 it will either be a socket 478 or 775 depending on the CPU and how old it is. I suspect its a socket 478. Do you know when it was purchased, the CPU frequency, dual core or single core, and whether its HT or not? How old is the PC?

Secondly you will have to change the PC case as Dell motherboards are specific for dell cases. Coolermaster centurion 532/530 gives great cooling and has plenty of space for upgrades and will only cost about £50 tops ($80ish US). You will be able to buy any ATX Motherboard for that case and there are many options I have used Asus, Asrock, and Abit boards on PCs i have built for friends and can recomend them. They are far less problematic than the Dell boards.

Here is a link for the Coolermaster case.

It is reviewed in www.custompc.co.uk in its elite section under mid-towercase
