What's inside ECC or NON-ECC ram?

I bought this Dimension 8200 and I am trying ti find out what type of ram it has inside it. Does Dell install ECC or NON-ECC rdram? Non-ecc ram is cheaper so would it be non-ecc OR since I have a decent system does it have ECC ram in it? I would like to get more ram whether it be through Dell or not but I am wondering if I need ECC or not? I would like to save some money so I guess I could get Non-ecc but is that the correct choice? I basically use my pc for using Photoshop 6, PhotoWebber and surfing the net. Please someone respond!!

ECC RAM is usually used in servers, but not commonly used in desktops. All of the Dell computers I have ever bought have had non-ECC ram. If you mix ECC and non-ECC RAM all RAM will run as non-ECC RAM. It is likely that your RAM is non-ECC.

Hi,

You are on the right track.
Non-ECC is cheaper and unless you paid extra for ECC RAM you got non-ECC.

Here are the memory specs for your system -
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm#1102365
Either way, you can mix ECC and non-ECC without any problems. You do not need ECC RAM for your system.
Try http://www.pricegrabber.com for a long list of online sellers or RDRAM, with customer reviews.
I would send you to the Crucial RAM picker on my memory upgrade page but Crucial does not sell RDRAM.

Darrell
