Window ME error using disk cleanup

When I try to run a disk cleanup I get the following message. Cleanmgr has caused an error in WININET.DLL. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Dell support suggest a "repair reinstallation of Windows ME" I was hoping there would be an easier way.

Almoran,

A "repair installation" of Windows ME is not usually a good idea.  In many cases, it will leave your system in worse shape than it is now.  One of the purposes of a "repair installation" is to replace missing or damaged Windows files.  Windows ME SFP (System File Protection) should help prevent damage to Windows files, but in some cases, it does not.  You may need to use the "extract" command to replace this particular file.  Information on using this command can be found at this MSKB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;265371

It is easy to use and is very effective in replacing specific files.  Since you know that the WININET.DLL is included in the error message, you should replace that one first.  If that fails to fix your issue, replace any other Windows files referenced in the error message.

This probably occurs because one of more of your temporary internet files are corrupt. You need to use your Windows boot floppy disk to to boot to DOS, then enter the following commands at the C:\ prompt. Follow each command by hitting the Enter key.

cd\windows
smartdrv
deltree history
deltree tempor~1

Note that the history file and the temporary internet files will be rebuilt when you remove the floppy disk and reboot into Windows ME.
