I would skip the update and wait to get windows 10 on a new computer. You can stop the nagging about upgrading. This can be done by uninstalling KB 3035583 from installed updates and changing windows update settings from automatic update to Ask me before installing and then rebooting and running win update again. Then right click on and hide 3038853 when it reappears and reboot. You can then change windows update back to automatic after a while if you want. More--

Some windows 7 computers are not good candidates for windows 10 no matter what MS says. Keeping win 7 lets you run some programs and hardware that will not run in windows 10--such as old versions of Office, Windows Media Player for playing videos and movies--not available in win 10, tv tuners that are not win 10 compatible, older printers, etc.

Wait 2 weeks until Windows 10 TH2 is released its the first major patch and should have fixed a lot of the issues.

what are others experiences of moving to windows 10?.

All my 64-bit upgrades went smoothly, and Windows 10 is a nice improvement over Windows 7. I had to clean-install 32-bit on the OptiPlex GX620, because the machine is not compatible with Windows 10 x64.

What were the issues you experienced?

This is not true the GX620 is perfectly capable of running 64 bit windows 8.1 or 10 when you install a 900 Series Pentium D like the 915.  Tower versions can take all the way to D960.

ALWAYS update the bios to A11 BEFORE changing the cpu.  A11 also seems to be required to see 2Gig Modules.  You should never use more than 2 X 2 Gig modules because you cant use the ram past 3.50

lahf/sahf  cmpxchg and the other instructions work fine.

The only issue with GX620 is that it will not work with more than 3.50 gigs of ram so when you put 4 gigs in you get 3.5 gigs useable regardless of 64 bit os or not.

I have seen inexpensive 900 Series Pentium D's on Ebay and Amazon

SL9QQ seems to be the max for a 5150

Intel Cpu Pentium D 945 3.4Ghz Fsb800Mhz 2Mbx2 Lga775 Dual Core Tray

Intel - P-D 3.4GHz/4M/800 Dual Core CPU SL9QQ

6 used from $12.00

INTEL PENTIUM D 945 SL9QQ 3.4GHZ 4MB CACHE 800MHZ FSB DESKTOP CPU PROCESSOR

Bios Updated to A11,  4 Gigs of Ram installed still Registers 3.50

Pentium D 820 was Replaced with Pentium D 915.  DELL HH807 Motherboard Bios A11.  Copper Heatsink  305W Tower.

I added a Radeon 6670 Video card.  All drivers are native to windows clean install.  I added directshow legacy feature and installed directx june 2010.  After windows updates everything works as expected.

I was referring to MY OptiPlex GX620, which is definitely not compatible with Windows 10 x64 (unless I upgrade it).

The lower end Pentium D 900 Series are less than $10 and the D960 is less than $40 now.  Pentium D 915 represents a universal upgrade that works on all sizes of GX520 or GX620 or several dimension models.

So the Optiplex is not incompatible the processor has specific requirements beyond NX and EMT64 for windows 8.1 and 10.

The GX620 is a good transitional machine because it has ATAPI CDROM but SATA HARD DRIVE.
