Windows cannot connect to e button support hardware error message

If you keep getting this message after you upgraded from ME to XP, it is because XP does not support Dell's E-Button.

If you wish to get rid of the boot error message, go to c:\program files\dell\solutioncenter

and delete the file called dell support. You can still access dell support online or the help button in the start menu.

It took me awhile to figure this out after reading everyones posts so I thought maybe I'd try to word it differently so that mental cases like me could understand it.

Gervan,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
The following information you should you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Error:
Windows cannot Connect to the E-Support Button Hardware

Problem: After reinstalling Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Microsoft Windows ME, and the Dell Solutions Center on a system with a chassis E-Support button, you will receive the error on boot up into Windows:

"Windows cannot connect to the E-Support button hardware. You can still access E-Support by double-clicking the desktop icon. If restarting your system does not clear this problem, you can repair it with E-Support."

Discussion: An updated file has been released which allows the E-Support button to function correctly. Windows 2000 systems are not affected.

Solution: Uninstall Dell Solution Center 1.2.16 and upgrade to version 1.3.16 or later. Version 1.3.16 can be downloaded from the Dell File Library, file name: DSC3_A00.exe.

-----OR--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem: After upgrading the 8100 system to Windows XP the hardware E-Support will not function as before.

Discussion: Microsoft does not support the Dell E-Support button with either versions of Windows XP Home or Professional.

If a Dimension 8100 is upgraded to the Windows XP OS, the system requires BIOS version XP2 to be used. If BIOS version A09 or any prior version is used, the E-button will cause a "Unsupported Device" error in Device Manager.

Solution: None, the E-button is not supported in the XP operating system. As a workaround use the Dell E-Support desktop version of Dell Solution Center in Windows XP upgraded systems. The system is working as designed, there is
no hardware failure or problem. You can download and install the A02 bios
version and XP version of the Dell Solution software to work around this
issue. Newer versions of the bios should work as well.

A02 bios file: BD81XPP2.exe
Dell Solution Center file: DSC20A01.EXE
