Windows Media Player Version 9.0
It is playing audio files and audio cds but stop playing the avi (movie) files of my Canon Powershot A75 Digital Camera. I have been playing these files until yesterday but I was trying to transferred these avi files into dvd format by experimenting couple of programs like TMPEnc 3.0 Xpress etc without any success.
I don't think it has anything to do with the Media Player unless the avi files were damaged in the process of transferring into dvd format.
Whenever I am trying to play these avi files into Media Player I get the error message "Windows Media Player has encountered an unknown error". I cannot play any avi files now.
I will appreciatge if anyone can help me here.
The Media Player came installed with my Dell. Do I have to uninstalled Media Player and reinstalled Version 9.0 from Microsoft website?
Many thanks
Kanti

Hi Kanti
During your experimenting you have two programs trying to be the default player thats why your getting the error message, only one of the players can be the default. When you set up media player remember when it asked you to put a check mark beside the files you want media player to read and you probably said select all. You either have to unselect them in media player or the other prog. Hope this helps

1Bowtie:
Many thanks for your response. I was aware of your suggestion but Windows Media Players is the only player which is the default player and others are not.
Other players do not have check mark beside the file (avi) I am trying to play in Windows Media Player. The problem is somewhere else.
If you find the solution for my problem then let me know.
Many thanks

Try doing this...
go to c:\program files\windows media player\
or whichever directory you installed your windows media player
click on the file setup_wm.exe. It will reinstall your windows media player and it will run again...

The problem is with the avi file which can be played in "Quick Time" player only and not with any other players as per the guide of my Canon Digital Camera.

Hi Lanny,
I never had a problem with my first Canon Power Shot A40 and it work fine with WMP 9.0. However, A75 is the one having a problem with WMP 9.0

Kanti,
Using the Microsoft wizard for downlowning from the camera is quicker and easy.

The Canon A75 avi files are playing in my other Dell 4300 and 4600 with Windows Media Player. I must have messed up Windows Media Player when I was downloading various codecs and programs to burn the avi files into DVD media, which I was not able to do it until now.
I don't remember when it was worked in the past but it did. I have now installed the WindowsXP SP2-CD version (yesterday-no problems)
