Windows Password?

I am attempting to set up two seperate desktops, but when I restart the computer it is asking me for the windows password...What is this password? Is it something that is set in the factory?

My machine is approx six months old and I have not previously set any passwords, how do I get out of this one?

If you want to have separate desktops for different users you will need to enter a user name and password everytime windows starts so it will know which desktop to load. This password can be anything or you can enter nothing or hit escape and get the default desktop.

I know how to set-up the desktops, the problem appears to be that a password is already set for windows...not by me!

Brand new machine, approx six months old and no password set by me!

I repeat...What is the password set at the factory?

There is NO password set at the factory, NONE.... As the Chief said, if you wan't multiple desktops you need a USERID/Password for each. If it's asking for one, simply assign yourself and the other user a USERID (your names for example) and a password. Also make sure that in the Control Panel double click on the Password Icon and when the window comes up click on the 'User Profiles' Tab then check the lower radio button and the lower box in the bottom section. If it's still giving you problems go to the first, change password tab, click the top button and change your windows password, then have the other user do the same....

Steve: Try this as well, go to Start > Find > Files and Folder and do a search on '*.pwl'. If you system finds the files then simply delete it/them then reboot. Windows will ask you for a new password. Set what you want for the 'default', then go into the control panel Passwords Icon and set the new userid's and passwords for the two desktops you want. You can get additional information here.

This is getting a bit silly..to recap!

9 hours ago, I had one desktop, when i enabled the password function, a box appeared requesting my user name (Full name in Block capitals) password blank. I entered a password which it in turn told me was not recognised. (This is the original problem).

Things grow!

I set-up two more desktops, 1 each for my wife and I, but each had differing functionality, as has the original desktop-now!

The problem now is such:

Various programs will not remember passwords even when requested to do so.

Icons on the desktop, appear to be different(eg.Bin looks like full when empty)

Parameter errors when online

Cannot find in your instrutions the parts you direct me to(eg password icon, set new...no facility to do so)

Short of deleting all and re-installing from scratch or carry on messing around and make things worse (or my day longer) ...What next?

Then try going into the Control Panel, Password Icon, and set a new password. The instructions from the Microsoft Knowledge Base are here.

Lauran,

Yes I tried that, aswell as all or any other passwords that I may or may not have typed at any given time, including all the deviations of my name i can think of (this is why i have been at it for 9 hours or so).

Anyway, I've deleted passwords for the three desktops as suggested by Bob and have just re-booted machine to see if it cures it.

I'll go offline, test and come back here.

Steve, open Explorer then go to 'Help' > 'About Topics' and use 'Passwords' as your search term. When the responses come back scroll down to the listed item that says 'To enable multiple users to personalize settings' and double click on it and go from there.

Lauran,

1ST comment..Thanks

2ND comment..Made me smile...thanks again!

Right...Problem seems to be sorted now.

So, how do I set up a desktop for my wife with just the basic default settings that windows would normally have (inter/explor.mic/outlo,rec/bin etc. not shortcuts or anything else ive loaded on my desktop.

Bob, do you think the work is still there but hidden after removing the password? That would be a clue in getting it back. Why would all his documents only be stored on the desktop? I have access to my documents folder from the desk top but never use this because it is disorganized. Perhaps that is what he means. Is his documents folder gone? Maybe if he goes to a blank space on the desk top and right clicks and then clicks "restore," it will show up. Maybe, he should open "find files and folders" and look for his files. They ought to be in Word, Office, or where ever. Shows us that we should back up important files, I guess.
