Windows re-install, driver question

Hey group, first time poster.

Last week I received a new Optiplex 9010. I decided to swap out the hard drive that came with the computer for a fairly new western digital velociraptor HD I had around. Then I re-installed Win7 and drivers on the new drive using the included recovery disks.

I took photos of the settings in device manager of the factory drive so I could compare them to my manual install.

After doing the manual re install with drivers, I noticed I no longer had "usb virtualization"  listed in device manager.

Am I missing a driver? Should I be concerned?

Thanks

Hi Nikhil, thanks for the quick reply and information. I did install the drivers in the correct order to the best of my ability (understanding) I believe the missing driver is part of the Win7 pro OS with XP mode (this is how I ordered it). Is it possible that I need to download and install the Win XP mode programs from microsoft?

Here is a link I found

www.sevenforums.com/.../39857-usb-virtualization-driver.html

That i think is my issue?

Sincerely,

Geode

Hi GeodeNZ,

After the operating system is installed, the drivers should be installed in correct order. Please use this link which shows the right order: http://tinyurl.com/8xvx6xy

As you have the resource disk, install the drivers in the correct order or use this link to install the drivers for the computer: http://tinyurl.com/cgcakw3

Click the link above, enter the service tag and select the operating system from the dropdown and follow the order in installing the drivers.

Check and reply for further help.

I installed XP Mode and the Virtual PC and notwthe "virtual usb connected driver" shows up now.

Can we discuss installing the drivers from the resources CD or downloaded straight from Dell? There are some inconsistencies between the resources cd and the dell download site based off my tag.

thanks

Does the Optiplex 9010 need/would like  to have the DSS (dell system software) installed? When I reloaded I did install the DSS software just after OS install and prior to the installation of the drivers. There seems to be some confusion surrounding this with different Dell models.

Thanks

Hi GeodeNZ,

You followed the right steps in installing the Dell system software.

Without installing the Dell Desktop System utility and the chipset drivers first, the rest of the drivers fail to install.

Hello Nikhil, I have checked several driver versions of my OEM setup versus the driver versions on my recovery CD and from the dell download site. Several of the Intel (chipset) drivers from Dell and my RCD are earlier versions then what came on my computer last week. No doubt it is tough to keep current, what do you think gives? Just curious.

Thanks

Hi GeodeNZ,

The Drivers for the hardware components will differ from RCD and support.dell.com website, this is because the RCD was manufactured and updated at the time when the Computer was manufactured. However installing the drivers from the support.dell.com is a better option, as the website keeps updating the driver versions on timely basis.

Hi Nikhil, what is confusing me is that the Chipset drivers I downloaded from Dell and the chipset drivers on my recovery disk are several revisions behind what was originally installed on my machine.

Thanks,

Hi GeodeNZ,

I understand technical issues can be confusing at times. I suggest updating the chipset drivers from www.support.dell.com is more reliable.

Yes that is what I have done. Thing is, the ones from Dell are very old versions.

Hi GeodeNZ,

Happy thanks giving to you too.

Once Dell receives the authorized drivers from the venders, Dell engineers test the derivers in the lab on the system for any issues, and the drivers which do not have any issues will be updated in the support web site.

Thanks,

That's one reason I always get the drivers straight from the vendors if I can.

I'm afraid I still do not understand, not sure it really matters. Why would Dell ship computers with newer driver versions than what they provide on the recovery disk  and downloads page.......

Probably because it takes a while to update the downloads page.

For best results with your new Optiplex, I suggest you download the appropriate retail Windows 7 ISO from Digital River, burn it to DVD, and clean-install it, followed by updating the drivers with the latest from Intel and any other hardware vendors.
