Hi Irish. I do have the Service Pack 3 installed already. I'm not familiar with all that safe mode and select manage/select service thing your talking about. I do already have automatic updates clicked on my computer also so I was always getting them automatically but for some reason lately every time I shut my computer off it says it has to install updates before turning off.
Hi again. I already installed the Service Pack 3 so I don't need to reinstall it. I did the other option you said with the stop service and then deleting that folder then starting the service again and still when I shut down there are updates just like before. I don't understand why when I shut down there are updates, why don't they just automatically update like their suppose to? Any other suggestions?
I have no idea if it fails or not, all I know is when I click start - turn off computer and then when I go to click on turn off there is a message saying there are updates to be installed, windows will install these updates and then shut down your computer. And when it installs it only says installing 1 of 3 or 1 of 1, etc., doesn't give any more info and then when its done my computer will shut off.
Hi Irish. When I went to the Microsoft Update section an update came up that was critical for my computer and it was the KB954430 which is Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2. I clicked on it to install and it says it installed successfully. But, however, I am still getting the icon in my tasbar saying this update is ready to install but it doesn't go through (Probably because it's already installed). Also when I go to shut down my computer it says there is an update to install before the computer can shut down. Then when the computer restarts up I go to Microsoft Updates and up comes that update again for a critical install so what's going on here? For some reason it's not installing or something. I already have the Service Pack 3 installed on my computer too so would that make a difference? Please tell me what to do to fix this problem. It's driving me crazy. Thanks.
Ok, we are getting somewhere now... Check out this link... Do what the resolution to this issue is... I think this might take care of your update issue. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729/
Hi. Nope, I tried that and it comes back. I think maybe I need to hide this update since this is the only one with a problem. I don't know how to do this though, can you tell me? I have Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3. Thanks. Or do you have any other ideas as to why this is not installing and keeps popping up. I think I don't need it cause I have the Service Pack 3 and that update has to do with the Service Pack 2 so that's why it's having a problem. Let me know, thanks.

There are a few things your can try....
1. Boot up in to safe mode and install it, then reboot into normal mode and see if it shows up again...
2. Do you have Service Pack 3 installed? If not, install it and that will forsure take care of that update.
3. Right click on MY COMPUTER Icon and select Manage / Select Services
Stop the Automatic update service.
Double click on MY COMPUTER Icon and go to c:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution and delete this folder, windows will create a new one.
Now again Right click on MY COMPUTER Icon and select Manage / Select Services
Start the Automatic update service.
Go to Windows updates and download any new ones you need.
See what happens...

Safe Mode: When booting up at the Dell screen, Press F8 and select Safe Mode......
There you can try and install this update.
You miss understood me... This is another option..
RIght Click on the My Computer Icon and select the Manage Option
In the Window that comes up expand Services
Find Automatic Updates and select it and at the top press STOP Service.
Then go to the folder c:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution and delete it.
Now go back and start the Automatic Updates Service you stopped before.
Now see if that update comes back or can install.

Try downloading that specific update and install it, that might clear out that update wanting to install when your shutdown.
