Wireless Router

Hey guys, i am getting a XPS 720 and im just wondering if you can recommend any good wireless routers to use with this. To get it set up do i just need the router and the network card so the comp can recieve the signal. Do the cards have to be built in or can they be external.

Thanks Guys.

Ok thanks for that, the built in ethernet connector, will that be ready to recieve a wireless signal from a router or do i need to put a ethernet card into it?
Also if i need to put a card into the ethernet connector is it done internally or externally

Thanks heaps for your help.

If you want wireless on the system then you will need to obtain a wireless card to insert into the computer. you would not use the ethernet connector then...the ethernet connector is on the back of the computer and looks like a phone jack only slightly larger.

Unless you plan on having the router not near the computer i would recommend  a wired connection...

But if you do wish to have the system wireless, then make sure that what ever router you get you get a matching wireless pc card.

if you want to start looking Linksys is a well known name. Go to linksys.com and check out their products.

Well we have 1 computer in the study and the internet connection next to it as well. This computer is going in my room which is about 4 meters away. I could have the router near the computer but then i would have to run the wire from my internet all the way to my room to the router.

Thats kinda like asking a parent which is their favorite child...you will get many answeres to this question. and all have their own opnions on why that is their choice.
And you have a choice between a/b/g or the newer flavors of N

The best advice is to check with your ISP as to which routers work with their system. I am not saying you need to get one from your ISP as they will be a bit more pricer. Just see if they have a list of the types that are know to work with their network..

You have a built in ethernet connector which in theory can go from 10/100/1000mps. Note that this is only the speed of the local network not the speed of your internet connection..that is fixed by your isp.

But since you have the capabilitiy to have a 1gig transfer rate it might be wise to look for a router that will offer that type of port..more  than likely those router will be in the wireless N flavors.

I would definitely take a look at Linksys Routers as mentioned above. I have always used their routers and had no problems with them. If you want to go wireless probably consider the Linksys WRT-54G or WRT-54GS.

Then in that case you will want to go wireless..
you would attach the router to the modem and have the other compute wired to the router. It is always good to have at least one system wired to the router as this makes configurating, troubleshootin, and updating easier..
4 meters should not be an issue unless your walls are stone, or have metal studs, as they would tend to attenuate the wifi signal. normal drywalls will attenuate the signal but not that much..
my router is upstairs and my laptop and wireless printer are both downstairs...

I guess you really need to start shopping and see how much you are willing to pay to get setup. For a "G" system will proably be around $150 for a router and card...N will run about the same or more.

Ok cool thanks for your help mate. Hmmmm, alot of people say wireless can be annoying. I wish there was a way of getting around this without running wires all the way to my room haha. Oh well.

Thanks Heaps

Hmm, well i cant decide between a wireless g or draft N system
I was looking at this one which i think is a Wireless G- http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/index.php/taxid;345396484;pid;997;pt;1

or this one which is a decent cheap Draft N- http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/taxid;345396484;pid;4470;pt;1

Does anyone have any advice or tips of which to go for?

I've used my laptop out on my deck, which is 70 feet from my router, my wifes machine is 50 feet away, and my sons is 30.

Ok thanks for the Advice. I have also been looking at the D-Link DIR-615 or the one you said. I cant seem to find any info on the WRT330 on Australian sites. I wonder if it was released in Aus.

The D-link  Dir-655 gets good marks for reliability and such.  It would be on my list if i was shopping.
That is interesting that the WRT330 is not listed on the aussie site..

Best thing to do is pick a couple of models and then google for reviews...look for conconses on different review sites...
