No, you do not have to wait. It will continue on its own while you surf the net. You can even use some other programs, but I would use caution if you use a program like a complex game that takes over the machines resources.
I regularly use Work or Excel while surfing and downloading without problems.
You can keep doing things while you're downloading, but it's suggested that you close all other applications before you begin to install them (and if they're auto install you should close everything before it's done Downloading).

If you have a dial-up connection to the Internet, the download will take a great deal longer if you browse while it is running, simply because both the download and the pages you are loading are sharing the bandwidth of your connection. You can, however, work in applications which aren't online, such as Word, without a problem.
