Wrong notes when playing MIDI files

Greetings everyone ! This is my 1st post. I am running a Dimension E521 desktop system. I am a musician & write music on my computer. I also frequently exchange MIDI files with other musicians. The problem I'm having when playing back MIDI files is: All notes are played back "flat" or in non-musical terms ->out of pitch Example -a D note plays back as a Db or C#. I was able to verify this with an electronic instrument tuner. This means that I cannot follow along with a musical instrument (piano, guitar etc) that is in perfect tune. I spent over an hour on the phone with a DELL help desk rep. We downloaded & installed new drivers for Codec353, Sigmatel + a different notation player. This made no difference. He suspects that it is a hardware problem. Really disapointed since I bought this machine to write music. Any ideas ? Marc

The problem, if you are using Integrated Audio, is the Microsoft GS Wave Table MIDI Synth, NOT the sound card.  The MIDI synth is generating the instrument tones (and key).  I've seen this before and the best advice is to get a good MID Synth, either a software synth such as the Roland VSC33 that comes with many versions of Band in a Box, or a hardware synth.

Tnx a many fireberd! I do have integrated audio on my machine. Do you know of any downloadable MIDI Synths that would work for now until I can get a good one as you mentioned? I live in a small community & none of the computer shops have anything in stock at this time. I have a deadline to meet to get some Tablature & sound file done. Thanks again !

I don't have a specific site, but I found this one  Click Me  by doing a google search for "software midi synth".

You could also check the Harmony Central site.  www.harmonycentral.com

What program are you using to play MIDI files?  That is, if in Windows Explorer, you select Tools -> Folder Options and then select the File Types tab and scroll down to the MID file type, what program is it using to play your MIDI files?

I'm wondering if you are using a program that has some kind of internal transposition option built into it.

Hi again & thanks for all the advise - much appreciated !! After researching & trying different solutions suggested, I finally ordered & installed a new (low priced) soundcard. BINGO !! Problem is solved. My notes are now "dead on" !
