XP will not load. Tried everything. HELP!!

First time post, hope this is the right place. When I turn my computer on and I get to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo it just stays right there. The green light on the computer goes dead. I have to hold down power to get it to turn off to try again. Same issue happens in SAFE MODE. I also tried to boot to previously good settings(or whatever that option is titled). I have a low end piece of junk Dimension 1100. Not sure about much else. We just did a memory upgrade from 256 to 1.25 last week and everything has been working great. We also have a wireless mouse/keyboard that has been working great since last week as well.

I keep my virus definitions up to date and run a scan every day. I did run a Spy Bot and found quite a few things there that I removed yesterday(havent Run SpyBot in a few weeks). I also noticed that last night the Start>Turnoff option did not take. I tried it several times and the computer acted like I wasnt even trying to turn off(couldnt log off or restart either). I had to press the power button for 5 seconds to get it to turn off.

Any ideas?

If you have a recovery partition, you can boot into it by pressing ctrl + F11 while your machine is booting.

Thanks for the ideas. I will see if anyone else thinks of anything like you said.

Yes I do have that option, which I didn't know about. Thanks. Before doing this, is there any way to get back up and running w/o losing everything? There are some things that are not saved that I would prefer to keep if there is another way to fix this.

Ouch. I'm kind of out of "cost free" ideas. If you're willing to spend a little, you could purchase a cheap HD and an OEM version of Windows, load Windows onto the new HD, copy all your files from the bad HD onto it, and then run the recovery partition. It all depends on how much those files are worth to you. Perhaps some of the other (wiser) forum members have some other ideas?

If you have another PC, you could try to put your HD in there and copy everything you want onto the other pc, or you could put your install disk in and select the repair option. The repair option should get your PC working, but this doesn't always work.

If you can't open up the computer to put a hard drive in, try purchasing an external USB hard drive enclosure.  They retail for about 15-20$ and if you can manage to salvage your data that way, it's definately a good investment :smileyhappy:
