XPS Gen 4 Compatable CPUs

Hey guys first post ever :)

Im lookin to upgrade the CPU and Memory in my old Dell XPS Gen 4.
Can I use a Dual Core E6700 in the system or no?

Also can I use pc 5300 memory in the system?

This is just going to be a secondary computer in the house.

The Gen4 will only run up to Pentium 4 HT processor, no dual core or quad core.
As far as memory, you can install up to 800MHz DDR2 ram (6400). I'm running 4GB of DDR2 800, I bought two of these kits. The Gen4 will run DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

The highest CPU would be the 3.4GHz P4 HT there is one HERE for $105. You can also go with a 3.2GHz HERE.

As far as putting in another mobo, I have explored this option. It might be do able, but it would take some work. Dell uses custom connectors for the power button, leds, usb, and other ports that are on the front of the case. That connector is not going to fit any 'store shelf' computer. The power supply is another issue, it is only a 460w so depending on what you put in the case that will limit high end components, also since it is a custom power supply you can't really replace it. Another problem could be cooling since Dell uses a custom duct system to cool the processor. And then if you did manage to get around all these obstacles, once you have the new mobo in, then you will need a new copy of windows, because your existing Dell OEM copy will not transfer to the new board.

Hi
The best CPU upgrade you can go to is the P 4 Prescott 670 or 671 at 3.8 GHz
Socket 775 LGA 90 MM you can not go any higher in speed .
The only deference is the 671 has visual technology at the same speed .
The 670 is hard to find and the 671 i have not found one yet !!
You may get lucky and find the 670 on eBay at a good price !!
I have the 670 on my D 8400 and it is really fast over the 3.00 i had !!!
But the coast was about $700.00 new 2 years ago!!
Good Luck

If it's going to be a "secondary computer", why bother trying to upgrade??

Yes it was going to be a second gaming system but im scraping it totally and starting from scratch.

Just ordered a Q6600, new 680i lt motherboard 2 500GB drivers etc.

Only thing Im keeping here is the optical drives, and video card the rest is being thrown out :(

Are you going to be trying to put this in the Gen4 tower? If so please post if you are successful or now, and what you did. I might consider gutting mine if you are successful.

If all you're keeping is the optical drive of the XPS Gen4....then your Message Subject is wholely misleading for people replying to your post in an effort to help.. :smileywink:

cannot use intel core 2 duo,,sorry

supported memory-
                                   looks like pc4200 ddr2 or pc 5300 ddr2

its possible you mgiht be able to run pc 6400,,,but i have not seen it as an option at any of the memory manufacuters sites.... and may reduce the speed if you did use it...

Not to labor the point, and taking into account you're new to the boards, but posting to infer you had questions about compatible CPUs for a Gen 4 system (and motherboard) when in reality you were scrapping it - except for the optical drive - and looking for input on what to put into a new case and along with other components - which isn't even remotely related to "compatible XPS Gen4 CPUs - is really inconsiderate.

I use PC6400 in my Gen4, 4GB worth. And it runs fine, and crucial does say that the Gen4 supports it HERE.

As far as running your Gen4 for a gaming system for your g/f, you probably only needed to upgrade your video card, and possibly add memory. I'm not sure what your systems specs are but you can see mine in my signiture below. And I run Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, Medal of Honor Air Born, Battlefield 2 & 2142, and more all on high or max settings.

Hy

I know it's a long time from wen you post this but I was thinking if you may have an idea for the best upgrade to a dell 4gen? I have one and I'm not going to throw it away, I reader spend some money for it, then to buy a new one. Hope you understand...
