XPS600 CPU upgrade

I was looking to upgrade my system to the E6600 Core 2 Duo CPU, but I'm not sure if my motherboard will support it or not. I currently have the XPS 600 w/ a Pentium D 3.4. Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Sorry, but another question about XPS 600 and cpu upgrade. :)

According to NVidia, the nForce4 SLI 16X is able to support a large kind of intel processors, including the new Core 2 Duo.

Do you know what is actually stopping us with a such cpu upgrade ?

I would like to upgrade myself but I'm not exactly interested by a Pentium D :)

Well, I found many topics about XPS600 processor upgrades, and usually the answers were "you can't".

But why ?

The only thing I found was a voltage issue.
According to Intel specs, P4 HT/D are 1.4v and C2D 1.2v.
But a processor like the E4300 can support much more than 1.4v and 3Ghz, so in theory it may work.

Sorry this is another question :)

Ok, since my warranty will be expiring in a month or two, I might as well change the motherboard and get the C2D E6600. Will there be any problems with the new mobo fitting into the XPS600 case or was the Dell mobo design only for Dell cases?

You will need a new case and possibly power supply(not sure about that).  In order to make a retail mobo work in the XPS600, you will need some serious dremeling and wiring skills.  You can pick up a good C2D mobo for a little over $100.  For a 680i SLI mobo you are looking at $180-250.  Good luck.  It is definately worth the investment(especially since your warranty is up).

You'll also need a new copy of XP/Vista (retail); the OEM one is tied to the Dell BIOS you'll be discarding.
