I would say that til you find the nature of the problem you should do a system restore as soon as possible, all program,accessories,system tools,system restore, sorry I'm not much help, you also can try to boot from the install cd and choose the repair option, I always put the system on another drive than my personal data so that I can reinstall the all OS without loosing my stuff, I also keep my programs .exe so that I can reinstall theme quick too, good luck

I should probably have added before- system restore is turned off from a virus problem I had quite some time ago. I was advised it was easier (and better) just to leave it off. I know I have the option of backing up all my info and reformatting, I was just trying to save the time & effort of doing that if there was an easier fix. I have never tried the repair option, I will look into that- thanks
