Hi ham.was,

There is a latest BIOS A06 released to address this issue on Insprion 5521, please download and install the A06 BIOS file from this link: http://dell.to/WMNTs0

Follow the below mentioned steps to update the BIOS:

  1. Ensure to connect the AC Adapter to the computer and the battery charge is above 15%.
  2. Close all the open programs and make sure to save all the data in the computer.
  3. Run the previously downloaded BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to update the BIOS.
  4. Restart the computer when prompted.

Please check the functionality of the fans and post the results.

Hi ham.was,

I would suggest you to check if there are any obstructions in the Air vents, use this link for troubleshooting the fans and air vents: http://dell.to/L49lxh

Run hardware diagnostics on system fans by following the steps from the link and reply if there are any errors, I would tell you next course of action.

Please reply for any further help.

I bought laptop1 week ago. No chance of obstruction in the air vent. However i check as u instructed and vent is clear and shining. I have run dell hardware diagnostic (FULL). Found no issue.

There is something wrong with laptop. This is some kind of manufacturing fault because system is new.

I'm actually having a similar issue, I'm running Windows 8 Pro on my 15R 5520 i7, and when the laptop is supposed to go into standby mode the screen goes black and the fans start running on maximum power. I also have to restart the laptop to get it working again, which is getting rather frustrating. I have recently updated the bios, so would that be an issue??

Hi Nate,

I can understand electronic devices can create confusion and frustration when they do not work the way they are designed for.

To assist you further, I would like to know when did the problem start, was it before updating BIOS or after updating the BIOS?

Awaiting your response!

Ya Nikhil A06 addressed the issue. I updated bios and using laptop for an hour. Fan is running normal and adjusting automatically. But I think 1 hour test is not enough, i give you more update after 24 hours.

Hi Nate/ Don Dodi,

As the BIOS are updated for the system, reverting the BIOS to the previous version is not possible. You could wait unit the next available BIOS version is released and check if that helps or install a system fan controlling software.

There are many third party softwares that may help you in controlling the fans speed in the system like Speed fan: http://bit.ly/46GB6i

Note: It is third party software, the website could have its own terms and conditions and there could not be any guarantee for the software; however try installing it if necessary.

Please check and reply.

Hello. Not to open another topic I write here because laptops are similar.

Last week I bought a Dell Inspiron 5521 15.6'' , Intel ® Core ™ i5- 3317U Ivy Bridge 1.7GHz , 4GB , 500GB , Radeon HD 7670M 1GB .

It came installed with Ubuntu 12.04 . After about 30 s or 1 min , the cooler to start gradually until it reached a maximum speed around of 5000 RPM.
I installed windows 7 on it, put all drieverele on dell site and it's ok . I did update the BIOS to version A06 as the site says . After the update has not started so hard and remain stuck at 5000 + RPM, but rarely starts and goes until about 2600RPM , barely hear him now he goes and it seems as if I just open utorrent + web browsing + YM + scot gmail + AIDA64 , do not start very rarely , and the temperatures are about this :
CPU 48 ° C
CPU1 # 1 Core # 1: 48 ° C
CPU1 # 1 Core # 1: 46 ° C
HDD 31 ° C

If we open all the ones listed above : utorrent + web browsing + YM + scot gmail + AIDA64 + game ( WOT ) you are playing with the settings at medium temperatures soar grow less and Coller in 2600 ~ 2700 RPM :

CPU 60 ° C
CPU1 # 1 Core # 1: 59 ° C
CPU1 # 1 Core # 1: 57 ° C
HDD 30 ° C

I do not know that for idle temperatures , medium, full or the critical ..

So I ask you :  Temperatures are ok those listed above ?  It's ok that Coller to start slowly so you do not play games ?

Otherwise I have nothing to reproach related to 5521 , looks good , moves well .. worth the money ..
