6400 Processor
I have a dell Inspiron 6400 with a T1350, 1.86, 2MB Single Core Yonah processor with 533 FSB. It has onboard 945GM video. I inherited this from the wife when she got a new Dell. I have put in a SSD drive with Win 7 and bumped to 2 gig of ram. Also got a new battery.
Everything works well except for the video. It is choppy with YouTube videos and even local video from the hard disk. It's annoying! She told me that it worked ok before my mods with XP installed but I can't verify that since I never used it myself. I also installed Ubuntu on the old HD and that seems to have choppy video as well. When playing a video the processor is maxing out at 100%. I did find a Win 7 video driver but it didn't make a difference.
I want to update to a dual core processor since this is about my last update option. I picked up a T2400 but it has 667 FSB and I am not sure what will happen if I install it. Will the FSB change by itself to 667? I don't see any options in Bios. As I understand it the 945GM chipset will work on 667 ok.
Sure I could just buy a new laptop but I would like to get this one functioning correctly and the best that I can get out of it if possible.

The bus speed is automatically set by the CPU that's installed.

I should add that I have updated to the latest bios.... 1.7 I believe.

It may be a faster CPU will help - but it's more likely the system is video-bound, and that can't be upgraded.
The T2400 should work fine in the 6400 - but you'd likely be better off with a Core 2 Duo (the T7200, T7400 and T7600 will all work).

What will happen with FSB speed though? The memory I have is 533.

The system should have shipped with PC2-5300 RAM -- 667 MHz, meaning it will run fine.
If it has PC2-4200 RAM, you'll need to upgrade it to install the faster CPU.

Yes it has PC2-4200. As I have stated my system is at 533 MHz. The stock memory was at that speed as well as the 1350. Unfortunately the upgraded memory I bought was 533 as well.
I guess you are inferring that by installing the faster processor my system will raise itself to 667 MHz. Is that correct? I realize I will have to get faster memory.

If I install the 677 MHz processor in my system and upgrade the memory to 677 as well, will my system set itself automatically to 677 MHz bus speed? There is no setting in bios to do this. That is my question!
Can anyone answer this?

I thought I would do a follow up in case anyone else finds this.
Initially after installing Win 7 on an SSD and bumping the memory to 2gig, I was having choppy video issues..... both locally and/or on YouTube/Vimeo. This Inspiron has the 945GM graphics onboard so that can't be upgraded. The only alternative to me was to feed it more juice.... raise the bus to 667MHz which it is rated for. Stock it had a T1350 processor and the system was running at 533MHz.
So, after installing a T2400 dual core processor, which bumps the system to 667MHz and PC-5300 memory (which is needed as it runs at 667 whereas the stock pc-4200 ran at 533MHz) Video now runs smoothly even full screen.
This also gave me an opportunity to clean everything, but it really didn't need that as it was nearly spotless inside. I had blown out through the fan inlets before though but one must be careful not to overspeed the fan with the air pressure. Also, I used MX2 paste on the processor and installed a new high tech pad on the MPU which will help improve heat transfer to the sink.
All in all it was way worth it!
