it could be a power problem but it could also be that the hdd may not have been assigned a drive letter.
see if you can do so in disk management.

I though about that but in the device list the device has a error.  Says device cannot be started code 10.  I also tried to use a usb 2.0 PCMCIA card but the one I got threw and error and said the device tried to pull too much power and shutdown the card.  Going to see if I can find a USB 1.1 drive enclosure that might work.

Thanks Rollie, The point to the drive is to store music, so I would prefer not to resort to a powered usb hub as that defeats the purpose.  I did notice that the drive won't work on a unpowered usb hub on the 8500 but it works fine direct connected to the machine.  The drive worked fine in an IBM Thinkpad.  The only difference is the physical hardware as I swapped hardrives between machines and uninstalled/reinstalled XP USB support.

karnster,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Yes, it could be a power problem.  You may also be able to use a powered USB hub to get around the problem.  Portable systems use low power ports.  It is possible that the 7500 falls below the minimum for the drive, and the 8500 does not.  Even if your drive is USB 2.0 it should work with USB 1.1.
