9100 Black Screen

I got my 9100 yesterday. No issues until I rendered a 3d studio max scene that had some complex texturing - then I heard the fans really rev up and the heat pumping out the back was more than I thought was possible from such a small volume. Anyway it happened - the screen went black. The only way to restart was a battery detach. I am in the prosess of trying the same scene at a higher resolution to see if I can replicate the issue. I will post the result soon. I should also mention that I had OpenGL running at best settings while setting up the scene. Sorry to bum anyone but I think this should be mentioned - Believe me when I saw it I was shocked and then very bummed!

I don't know if your notebook went into standby mode or not, but was you power indicator steady green or going on and off?

There is also a new ***Recommended*** firmware for the ATI 9700 that's in your notebook, which I promptly updated to on the first day I received my 9100 which I received this past Tuesday.

There are 2 patches.  R75495.exe does not use a floppy.

As far as being in standby mode - I didn't notice any indicator lights blinking.

I tried rendering a hi rez version of the same scene without getting the lockup - I am more inclined to believe that my rapid fire switching between Direct 3d and OpenGL with various quality settings may have caused the problem. Just the same I am taking your advice and doing the video BIOS update - only problem is that I don't have a floppy drive (I wonder if it can be done some other way?)

Ok, so I just need to install R75495 and not the other one (BR75495) - I'm not clear on whether they are the same or 2 different parts of the install. Also since this the first time I've done a BIOS update are there any precautions that should be taken?

1) The 2 patches are the same.  One uses a reboot ti boot off floppy.  The second will run from the HD.

2) I ran into a black screen today.  Somehow my computer went into a semi standby mode.  This reminded me of my desktops that went into a semi-standby state and the keyboard did not respond, which occured several times before I disabled power saver mode.  I held down the power button until it powered off.  I think about 10 seconds.  I never did like standby mode and thats the reason my desktops don't have powersaving enabled.  But since it's my laptop, I'll live with this for right now.  Other than that, I still L O V E my 9100.

Thanks for the BIOS info.

What type of application(s) were running when you got the black screen?

I've was  exiting a game "Age of Mythology" after trying to put it in suspend mode which did not work while the game was running.  I'm not even sure if I exited completely.  I walked away for about 30 minutes and when I came back the screen was black.  I was also running the seti@home client as my screen saver which I have changed.
