A: drive error message: write proctected/disk full

Question

I have an Inspiron 5000, W98se OS, internal A: drive.  Haven't used this drive in quite sometime, but recently tried to place a BIOS update on a diskette.  First, had to erase some old files on a diskette I had laying around.  When in Windows Explorer, after selecting the files to delete, I received an error message that the disk was write protected.  Tried another diskette, same thing. I searched for a clean diskette, and then when I tried to drag the downloaded file from my desktop to the A drive, I received an error message that the disk was full! I then became suspicious, and tried all the above on a Latitude LS with an external A drive (OS W2K).  No problem with the diskettes being either erased or written to. Anyone have an idea what the deal is with the internal A drive on my Inspiron?  Many thanks!!!!!!

Have you tried running the Dell Diags on the affected system/drive, to see if the drive is shot?  Details are in the system documentation.
