Abrupt System Shutdown

Hi,

I was surfing with IE7 and was viewing a Webpage and as I clicked a link for no apparent reason my I9300 system made an audible noise and powered down. I waited a few minutes trying to understand what just happened, then booted up. Everything is fine like nothing happened??? No error messages??? It was not a household electric power issue and there are no thunderstorms or anything like that. It really startled me and I'm wondering what, if anything further I should do?

Your every consideration is appreciated.

Thank you,

Bob

Look in the event viewer for any mention of error messages around the time this happened.  The event viewer can be accessed through Start->All Programs->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer.  You might also want to run the diagnostics on the computer to see if something shows up there.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The first thing I did was check Event Viewer and Error Log, no cognizant entries.

Thanks,

Bob

If the diagnostic also fails to throw up anything, I would say forget about it (except be careful when you revisit that site!)

Diagnostics was suggested just to put your mind at ease since it will probably turn up nothing.  And I agree that WebMD is probably safe, but so many sites get hacked nowadays, so you can never say something is 100% safe.  In any case, if you were behind a good router and you had anti-virus, anti-spyware, software firewall, etc., I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Hi Balaji,

I have this system 2 1/2 years and this is a first; if it happens again I'll definitely be concerned.

Thank for all your help, you've been very kind.

Hi,

I have not done any diagnostics. Do you think its necessary? The site was WebMD which I would consider to be safe, however, I have not tried to repeat my steps.

Thank you,

Bob
