AC Adaptor Connection

I have an issue with the AC Adaptor connection for my Inspiron 9300. The rubber connector (not the 3-prong connecter, the other end of the adaptor) is coming apart. In addition, the rubber sheathing on the wire does not seem to be attached to the adaptor, and with just normal handling, can be pulled until the metal sheathing beneath is showing.

My question is not so much if this needs to be fixed, but whether or not this will continue to be an issue. If I were to get a brand new adaptor, would the same problem arise within another year. Looking through the boards, I couldn't find a good answer.

I have had the computer less than a year and have tried to be careful handling it. Any comments or feedback is welcome. Thanks.

I don't think this is a common issues (atleast from my experience and looking on the board). I think if you get a new AC Adapter it wont break like that unless some damage happens to it. If your under warrenty then the new AC Adapter shoudl be free

Expect this to happen again. I got my Inspiron 8600 in February of 2004 and I'm now on my third adapter, and I had the exact same problem you did. I once had the cause of the problem explained to me by someone much more knowledgable than myself. The gist of it is that while they add the "flexy" rubber part near the adapter tip to try to cut down on wear and tear, it actually gets shreaded from the inside out by the metal sheathing inside of it.

My suggestion to you would be to call tech support and get a new one, assuming you are still under warranty (as the previous poster suggested). And if you're not under warranty, try parts-people.com. They're cheaper than Dell, and their shipping is fairly quick. Also, just because the rubber sheathing is falling off does not mean you cannot use the adapter in the interim. In fact, I would suggest using it until you have actual problems powering the computer, to prevent wear and tear on your new adapter.
