Try extracting the files from R171789 to some directory by running it. Then go into the device manager and double click on the Sigmatel audio, click the driver tab, click update driver and point it to the location where you extracted the files from.
If you don't see "Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec" under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers". You most likely don't have an appropiate driver installed.

i have a smiliar problem to his, but my sound works and i am running xp SP3
everytime i close my laptop and open it up...my sound doesnt work...i would either have to restart laptop or reinstall driver
Any ideas??

Intel T7500 2.2GHz, 2GB 667MHz RAM, 8400M GS
120Gb 5400rpm HD
Windows XP SP2
i tried with the driver R171789, but doesnt work yet

That's the driver I'm using with XP, and I haven't had any problems at all.
Have you updated Windows through Windows update?
What do you mean by "doesn't work yet"? Does it give you an error message?

hi, with R171789, the installer go well without any error message, but the audio never doesnt work.
I tried other audio drivers too and every installer show me a error with the device compatibility

Did you install the chipset driver 1st?

Sigmatel audio doesn't appear in the device manager, and i install first the chipset driver.

hi, finally, i solved my audio problem XD, thanks for your time
the solution was install first http://www.yournewdriver.com/SIGMATEL_STAC_92XX_C_Major_HD_Audio_Dell_8580.htm
then this does not work fine, but it appear in the device manager, then i choose i update the driver with R171789 manually.
i hope that this information could help somebody
