Hello. First run the audio test in the Pre-boot Assessment  hardware diagnostic utility, which resides in the BIOS memory on the motherboard. This is a link to my instructions for how to use the tests to find out if the speakers have failed.

There are 2 versions of the Pre-boot tests. Most of the newer Dell laptops have the one called ePSA. That one has a dedicated audio test. The instructions have a picture of the ePSA tests.

Some of the models have the older PSA tests, which do not have an audio test, but the instructions explain how to use the PSA color test to test the audio.

When you run either the ePSA or the PSA test, and follow the instructions in my link, you should hear some tones from the internal speakers. If you do not hear the tones from the speakers during the test, then the speakers have either failed or become disconnected.

If you do hear the tones then the speakers are all right. In that case, install the Windows 7 IDT audio driver for the N5010, this way:

1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.
2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.
3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates.
4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.
5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).
6. Find the "setup.exe" file.
7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.
8. Select the Properties.
9. Select the Compatibility tab.
10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.

If installing the IDT driver does not help there is a good chance that there has been what I call "sense pin failure" in the headphone jack. The first part of the Headphone Jack FAQ has my explanation of the issue. If you ever perform a system recovery (revert the laptop back to its original configuration by using the Factory Image), and if doing that does not make the speakers work (assuming they passed the PSA test), then the laptop definitely has sense pin failure.
