backlight problems with Vostro 1310
i have an interesting problem that started this morning... I opened the lid and nothing was displaying. HDD activity light was flickering, so I know that it was running, but display was very faint. So I close the lid and notice that the backlight turned on when it was about 30 degrees open... if I opened the lid more, the backlight would turn off. As the day progressed, I was able to open the lid more and more before the backlight went out... by mid-day, I was able to open the screen 90 degrees and it works.. but if I open more, it turns off...
I'm assuming it's a problem with the lid close switch being stuck or the inverter...
Anyone ever have something similar happen to them?
Thanks,
Stefan

Exactly the same thing happened to me with my Vostro 1310 tonight. I used the computer on the tram home, got home, and then just as you say, the monitor turns off at angles above approximately 90 degrees.
It's under warranty so in a couple of days I'll get it fixed soon.

I ended up repairing it myself. I opened up the screen and top of the keyboard (you can find instructions on how to do this on the DELL site), and found out that the problem was the LCD cable (that is placed by the left screen hinge) was being squeezed as you open and close the screen. You can check if this is the problem for you by playing with the cable and seeing if your backlight turns on and off. I replaced the cable and it works as good as new. You can actually order the part on ebay... just look for

I actually have a 1510 but the problem seems to be similar....if I open the lid more than 40 degrees or so, the backlight dies, but when I move it back, it comes back on.....this is consistent behavior for it. Thank you for the fix !!
